I joined Ernest Jones back in 2005 as a Christmas Sales Associate and I haven’t looked back. Then, I was a student, working part time around my studies; now, I am a Merchandiser for Ernest Jones in the bridal diamonds team. In between I’ve worked as a Store Supervisor, Allocator/Senior Allocator and Assistant Merchandiser, and have worked for both H.Samuel and Ernest Jones.
The experience I gained in store, working with customers, understanding our products and company systems, and gaining first-hand experience of consumer retail gave me a great grounding for my roles within the Stores Support Centre. In fact, this understanding was key to me getting my first Allocator position.
There’s a great culture of support and whenever I’ve needed help or guidance it has been readily available. In addition, there’s plenty of opportunity for formal training. As well as technical training there’s a programme for developing management skills – I now hold a qualification in front line management thanks to a Chartered Management Institution course which was all part of my career development training.
Plus, in addition to the training opportunities, each role within Buying & Merchandising has a work book program. These are guides to skills required in each role and are completed and signed off, leading to pay rises and promotions. The benefit is that people can see a clear development path and know exactly what they need to work towards to achieve the next step in their career.
